How Google AI Mode Impacts Brands: Is Your Brand Still Visible in AI Search?

For most businesses, not yet. The gap between where users are now searching and where most brands are investing is wider than it looks.

Vice President and Head of Search at Google Elizabeth Reid announced that Google AI Mode had become the default search experience for over one billion monthly users. This number is doubling every quarter. This is not a future shift. It is the current reality of how people are finding businesses like yours, right now.

Key Takeaways

  • Google AI Mode is now the default search experience for over a billion monthly users, replacing the traditional list of links with a single AI-generated answer.

  • Independent research of 800 companies across 16 industries found that following Google's AI search rollout, ranking pages declined by an average of 11.1%.

  • Brands cited inside AI answers receive 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands not cited.

What Is Google AI Mode And How Does It Change Search?

There is a profound change in online visibility brought about by how Google AI Mode impacts brands. Google AI Mode replaces the traditional search results page with a single, AI-generated answer drawn from across the web.

With these changes, instead of searchers being fed a list of 10 links where they are most likely to find the information they need, the user sees a synthesised response and 93% of those AI Mode searches end without a click.

I have written about zero-click search before. AI Mode now serves up a fully AI-mediated experience where the generated answer is the destination. The website behind it is optional.

For any business that depends on search to be discovered, this changes the fundamental question. It is no longer "are we ranking?" It is "are we being cited?"

What Happened to Ranking Brands When AI Search Took Over?

This is the data point Australian SMEs most need to understand.

Tank Research's independent analysis of 800 companies across 16 industries found that in the year before Google's AI features launched, all sectors saw their ranking pages grow by an average of 14.1%.

In the year after, ranking pages declined by an average of 11.1% across almost every sector. The hospitality sector saw ranking pages fall by 10.3%. Fashion fell by 20.6%. Only aviation bucked the trend.

Organic traffic growth also slowed sharply. From 26.3% growth on average before AI search to just 3.7% after.

This is UK research, but the pattern it reveals is global. What it shows is that Google AI Mode does not simply add a layer on top of traditional search. It restructures which sources get surfaced and which get bypassed.

The brands absorbing the impact are the ones whose strategy was built entirely around holding a position in the traditional link results and whose off-site reputation signals were not strong enough to feed the AI layer that now sits above it.

As I have written in the Reputation Ecosystem and Entity Authority frameworks, AI does not verify a brand's credibility by reading its website. It reads the web around the brand, more specifically, the earned coverage, the brand mentions, the citation networks.

Brands that have built those signals are the ones AI Mode is surfacing. The ones that have not are declining alongside the traditional results.

How Google AI Mode Impacts Brands Commercially?

There is a finding in the research that I want to make sure does not get lost in the headline concern about clicks declining.

Analysis following Google AI Mode's rollout found that brands cited inside AI Overviews receive 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands not cited. Even as overall click volume falls, being the named source in an AI answer carries real commercial value.

The reason is intuitive once you think it through. When AI names your brand in its answer, it does something a traditional ranking cannot. It recommends you.

A user who sees your brand cited does not need to compare you to nine alternatives. They already have a reason to search for you specifically. That subsequent branded search shows up in your analytics as a direct or organic visit, often with no signal that AI drove it.

This is why I track branded search velocity as one of the most important indicators of AI search performance. When AI recommends your brand, it creates search demand that converts at a fundamentally different rate than a cold organic click. The attribution is not visible in standard reporting.

What Should Businesses Do Now To Show Up In AI Search?

The same three things I work through with every client whose traditional rankings are holding but whose pipeline is behaving in ways that traffic reports do not explain.

First, build off-site reputation signals. Earned media coverage in credible publications that AI can extract and cite. Without those signals, AI Mode has less evidence to draw on when constructing its answer, and your brand does not make it in.

Second, structure your content for AI extraction, not just for human readers. The pages AI Mode cites are the ones that open with direct answers, use clear section structure, and do not bury the key information in a long narrative. This is what the RAG Content Strategy post covers in detail. Extractable content is not a style preference, it is an AI readability requirement.

Third, invest in the citation networks that AI Mode draws from. As I covered in the co-citation link building post, appearing consistently alongside trusted sources in your category is what compounds AI's confidence in your brand over time. A single high-DR link in an unrelated publication does not build that. Sustained, category-relevant presence does.
